Tungsten carbide cutting tools, especially indexable tungsten carbide cutting tools, are the leading products of machining tools, and since the 1980s, various varieties of integral and indexable tungsten carbide cutting tools or inserts have been extended to various cutting tool fields, among which indexable tungsten carbide endmills have been expanded from simple turning tools and face mills to various precision, complex and forming tool fields. So, do you know the basics of carbide cutting tools?

Here is the content list:

Types of tungsten carbide cutting tools

Tungsten carbide cutting tools can be divided into tungsten carbide-based carbide and titanium carbide (TiC(N))-based carbide according to the main chemical composition. Tungsten carbide-based cemented carbide includes tungsten-cobalt (YG), tungsten-cobalt-titanium (YT), and rare carbide (YW), each of which has its advantages and disadvantages.

Titanium (nitride) carbide is a carbide with TiC as the main component (some with other carbides or nitrides added), and the commonly used metal bonding phases are Mo and Ni.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) classifies carbide for cutting into three categories.

K class, including Kl0 ~ K40, is equivalent to China's YG class (the main components of WC. Co).

P class, including P01 ~ P50, is equivalent to China's YT class (the main component of WC, TiC, Co).

M class, including M10 ~ M40, is equivalent to China's YW class (the main components of WC-TiC-TaC (NBC)-Co).

Each grade is represented by a number between 01 and 50, respectively, from high hardness to maximum toughness between a series of alloys.

Performance characteristics of cemented tungsten carbide cutting tools

The performance characteristics of cemented tungsten carbide cutting tools are as follows.

① High hardness: Cemented tungsten carbide endmills are made of carbide with high hardness and melting point (called hard phase) and metal binder (called bonding phase) by powder metallurgy method, its hardness reaches 89~93HRA, much higher than HSS, at 5400C, the hardness can still reach 82~87HRA, the same as the hardness of HSS at room temperature (83~86HRA). The hardness value of cemented carbide varies with the nature, number, particle size, and metal bonding phase content of carbide, and generally decreases with the increase of bonding metal phase content. When the bonding phase content is the same, the hardness of YT-type alloy is higher than YG-type alloy, and the alloy with TaC(NBC) added has higher high-temperature hardness.

②Bending strength and toughness: The bending strength of commonly used tungsten carbide cutting tools is in the range of 900 to 1500 MPa. The higher the content of the metal bonding phase, the higher the flexural strength will be. When the bonding agent content is the same, the strength of YG type (WC-Co) alloy is higher than YT type (WC-TiC-Co) alloy and decreases with the increase of TiC content. Cemented carbide is a brittle material, and its impact toughness at room temperature is only 1/30 to 1/8 of that of HSS.

Application of commonly used tungsten carbide cutting tools

YG type alloy is mainly used for processing cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and non-metallic materials. Fine-grain tungsten carbide cutting tools (such as YG3X, and YG6X) have higher hardness and wear resistance than medium grain when the cobalt content is the same, which is suitable for processing some special hard cast iron, austenitic stainless steel, heat-resistant alloy, titanium alloy, hard bronze, and wear-resistant insulating materials.

The outstanding advantages of YT type carbide are high hardness, good heat resistance, higher hardness and compressive strength at high temperature than YG type, and good oxidation resistance. Therefore, when the knife is required to have high heat resistance and wear resistance, the grade with higher TiC content should be used. YT class alloy is suitable for processing plastic materials such as steel, but not for processing titanium alloy and silicon aluminum alloy.

YW class alloys have the performance of YG and YT class alloys, with good overall performance, which can be used for processing steel, but also for processing cast iron and non-ferrous metals. These alloys can be used for roughing and intermittent cutting of various difficult-to-machine materials because of their high strength if the cobalt content is increased appropriately.
