Tungsten, as a rare metal, has good electrical conductivity and a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which makes it suitable for manufacturing integrated circuits. The higher melting point and high-temperature resistance make tungsten used for manufacturing filaments and nozzles for scanning electron microscopes, and after the electrolytic polishing process, tungsten is used on a large scale in the fields of microelectronics, precision instruments, and medical treatment. As a product of tungsten, what is the electrolytic polishing of tungsten spheres, and what are the conditions? Let's take a look.

Introduction of tungsten ball electrolytic polishing process

Electrolytic polishing of tungsten spheres is a method in which the tungsten alloy ball is used as the anode and the insoluble metal as the cathode, and the cathode and anode are immersed in the electrolytic bath at the same time, and a direct current is applied to make the surface of the tungsten ball form an oxide film and dissolve continuously, to reduce the surface roughness and improve the luster of the tungsten ball.

The process has the advantages of high productivity, simple and convenient operation, low material loss, and can process complex-shaped workpieces. The electrolytic polishing solution commonly used for tungsten electrolytic polishing at home and abroad is mainly alkaline, and the surface of the tungsten sphere after electrolytic polishing is smooth and scratch-free, with high mirror reflectivity and reduced surface roughness, which provides a new solution for the surface treatment of tungsten.

The effect of changing polishing process parameters on tungsten ball electrolytic polishing

In the case of the same time, the same temperature, and different voltages, when the voltage is low, many streaks and scratches are left on the surface of tungsten balls. And as the voltage increases, the scratches gradually decrease, and the surface becomes more and more shiny and flat until 22V, the surface of the tungsten alloy ball is the flattest and free of scratches. When the voltage is too high, the current density in the local area is too high, and the surface layer of the tungsten ball is damaged, producing bubble clusters on the surface that cannot escape from the surface, thus producing etching pits and pockmarks on the surface.

In the case of the same time, same voltage, and different temperature, the low temperature will increase the viscosity of the solution, thicken the anode mucous film, which is not conducive to the diffusion of anode products, so that the surface of the tungsten ball has bubbles trapped, resulting in pockmarks and patterns. As the temperature tends to be closer to 20℃, the scratches on the surface of the specimen are gradually reduced, the tungsten sphere tends to be flat and smooth, and the effect of electrolytic polishing is more obvious. When the temperature continues to rise, the surface of the specimen again appeared with craters and scratches. This is due to the high temperature which causes the local corrosion too fast and causes craters and scratches.

In the case of the same temperature, the same voltage, and different times, the polishing time is too short, the polishing is not complete, and the surface of the tungsten ball still has a large number of white particles and a few scratches. As the time increases to 7min, the surface of the tungsten sphere has no scratches, no pit defects, and the resulting surface is better. If the polishing is continued, it will lead to over-polishing and cratering of the surface.

Conclusion of tungsten sphere electrolytic polishing process

From the experimental data, it can be found that different trends of tungsten sphere electrolytic polishing are obtained by changing three electrolytic polishing process parameters of voltage, temperature, and time under the same electrolyte. In the sulfuric acid-methanol electrolyte, the best polishing effect of tungsten spheres can be obtained only at a voltage of 22 V, a temperature of 20°C, and a time of 7 min.
